It's clear to see that matching toes and nails was so last season! It's been a long time since I've seen a woman with red toes and red fingernails, posing the question: if we don't match, how do we coordinate?
With peep toe shoes on the rise, and gloves simply not an option in the summer, manicuring and painting nails has become almost as vital as the weekly shop. And yes, for me it's become more of a bi-weekly thing, with my favourite polishes popping out every 3 days to splash a new colour onto my nails. Is this over obsessive? Perhaps. But it's summer, so what's not allowed in the sweltering summer months?
Red and Metallic
I've seen this literally everywhere! Mostly, women wear the metallic on the toes and the red on the fingers, but personally I'd wear it the other way round. There's a very select range of colours that I'll wear on my toes and red is up there at number one!
So, my favourite red polish?
Tate polish by Nails Inc is absolutely gorgeous. Not too coarly, not too dark, it's that classic shade you see on all the old Hollywood movie stars. (buy here for £11) (pictured below)
And the metallic?
There's a tonne of options here, but to celebrate the olympics, here's my pick of the best bronze, silver and gold!
Obviously, if you're trying to save money and time, buying Nails Inc's The Metallics Collection (here) seems the best plan of action, as you get three polishes for less than three polishes costs (comprendez?)
But these are my favourites:
Gold: Essie's Good as Gold (buy here) (plus, the adverts for these metallic shades at the moment are divine! Pictured below)
Silver: Nails Inc's Cambridge Terrace (buy here)
Bronze: (apart from a tan, I never normally sport bronze - after all, it's all about the gold. But here's a polish anyway. And if you're lucky enough to naturally olive skinned, try and avoid this colour as it'll be too close to your actual skin tone. If you're orange, go for it - it might look really hot). Essie's Penny Talk (buy here, although there's none left in stock - boo hoo)
Off Shades
Pretty hard to describe, but I feel Peter Philips described it perfectly in July's Vogue: "I prefer unmatched fingers and toes. I like fuchsia on the hands, say, and then a red on the feet. I like things a bit 'off'". And as Chanel's creative director of make-up, I not only listened, but I acted immediately, applying fuchsia and red (as he told me to!) Here's the fuchsia I chose (Dior's Vernis in Plaza here) and I chose my favourite red for my toes.
Deep Sea
The ocean was a huge trend in the spring, and as we're all going to the sea this summer, why not channel it in nail polish? (yes, these thoughts come to me in the middle of the night)
Blue nails have always been a big hit for me, and my favourite polish doesn't quite match my usual tastes. It's on the 'cheaper end of the scale' shall we say, but it's incredible. The shade is Sea Breeze (apt, no?) and it's by Boots' range called 17. The best bit? It's £2.99. Buy three here
Then for the feet you have two choices: do I go dark blue (as if you're getting deeper into the sea)? Or do I go green (because the sea is often described as green... Sometimes)
Navy: Chanel's Blue Boy (if you're going for a lighter navy) or Blue Rebel (if you want a real navy). Either weay, these are both from the Jeans de Chanel collection which I L.O.V.E
Green: Again, two choices; do I go super light that I can wear again? Or do I go darker so it vaguely looks like the sea? I love this Nails Inc polish called Hyde Park Gate which will satisfy all your lighter green needs here. As for a sea green, I don't normally venture into such unknown territory, but I saw this on MAC's website (Screening Room. It's more bluey than greeny but it's still here) And this OPI Go on Green shade.
If this post has taught me anything, it's that some nail websites have the most awesome features (see OPI for 'try on a shade' and Nails Inc for 'design your own bottle and packaging' - that's more fun than it sounds!) and that matching is soo last season.
But, if you insist on matching, please make it acceptable with Chanel's hottest shade, Holiday
